Nuit Blanche

www.scotiabanknuitblanche.ca/

Now in its third year, Nuit Blanche, produced by the City of Toronto brings together hundreds of Toronto museums, galleries, cultural and educational institutions, and neighbourhoods with visual, performance and interactive art works. This year, four local and national art curators Wayne Baerwaldt, Dave Dyment, Haema Sivanesan, Gord Hatt, have designed different art "zones" across the city for the event. Nuit Blanche 2008 returns with a vengeance on Saturday October 4, and with 195 exhibits and an expected 800,000 visitors for this one-night dusk-till-dawn event... they're soon going to need a bigger boat. 195 exhibits, 12 hours ... this year's curators have revealed the line up early, so I can plan my strategy and cover as much ground as possible. With three Zones spread across the city from the Financial District to Liberty Village, there's a lot of ground to cover. Gordon Hatt, Curator of Zone A, promises to completely transform public spaces like Toronto's City Hall towers, the Ontario Power Generation building, Maple Leaf Gardens, the Eaton's Centre and other famous locations.

For 2008, you'll find 155 destinations divided into three zones, each featuring a mixture of Exhibition Projects and Independent Projects. After you’ve looked over the 2008 Programme, visit Plan Ahead for tips and tools to help you organize your sleepless night.

Exhibition Projects: Under the direction of four curators, 45 temporary public art projects by local, national and international artists have been commissioned within four outdoor exhibitions. To encourage involvement by a wide range of Toronto artists – established and emerging – each exhibition includes projects selected by the curators through an open call process.

Independent Projects: Toronto museums, galleries, cultural and educational institutions, and neighbourhoods open their door all night long for this one evening. Admission is free and many have collaborated with new and established artists to offer unique experiences.

Zone A – Downtown North
Zone A offers 64 art destinations to explore. Visit some of the city’s top attractions, beautiful churches, Toronto’s foremost educational institutions and the historical neighbourhoods of Yorkville, Church Street Village, Cabbagetown and Downtown Yonge. Iconic Toronto structures are transformed in unexpected ways for this one night. Historic hockey shrine Maple Leaf Gardens opens its doors for art instead of sport, while reformed Berlin hackers turn City Hall’s 960 windows into the world’s largest interactive computer screen.

Curated by Gordon Hatt, the Zone A Exhibition includes 15 installations that explore feelings of belonging and alienation in an ephemeral and playful manner. Each Exhibition Project is mapped with a square symbol.

In Zone A explore 49 destinations created by 36 Independent Project partners. Each Independent Project is mapped with a circle symbol

Zone B – Downtown South
Discover 42 art destinations in Zone B. Rich in local history, Downtown South clusters art projects amid both Victorian architecture dating back to Toronto’s beginnings in the early 19th century and the towering glass, concrete and steel skyscrapers found in the Financial District. Normally eerily silent after dark on a Saturday night, Bay Street towers and parking lots will be infused with art.

Curated by Wayne Baerwaldt, the Zone B Exhibition includes 15 sentimental and spooky installations that endeavour to blur the lines between performer and audience. All Exhibition projects are mapped with a square symbol.

This zone features 27 destinations by 24 Independent Projects waiting to be discovered. Each Independent Project is mapped with a circle symbol.

Zone C – South/West
Chose from 50 dusk-to-dawn destinations in Zone C. Home to an impressive concentration of galleries, art centres, unique cafés and distinctive hotels, the South/West zone has plenty to see along both Queen Street West and Liberty Street. In Liberty Village encounter a complete sensory experience of blazing fire, the rush of a waterfall, and the sound of coconut crunching beneath your feet.

Zone C features two curated Exhibitions located in the Liberty Village area. Curator Haema Sivanesan’s Exhibition of seven provocative installations is a dark and unsettling exploration of cultural diversity in art that generates a cross-cultural dialogue. Dave Dyment’s Exhibition of eight installations delve into concepts of hope and expectation with works that can connect with large audiences. All Exhibition projects are mapped with a square symbol.

Check out 35 art destinations created by 28 Independent Project partners. Each Independent Project is mapped with a circle symbol.
